Former Premier League star Carlton Palmer believes that Leon Bailey will be a good signing for Aston Villa.

Bailey completed a £30m move to Villa Park this week from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen and became Dean Smith’s third summer signing after Emiliano Buendia signed from Norwich City for £38m, and Ashley Young returned to the club on a free transfer from Inter Milan.

The 23-year-old, who can operate from either wing, featured 40 times for Leverkusen last season in all competitions and was in fine form, scoring 15 goals and providing a further eleven.

On Villa’s newest recruit, Palmer told FFC: “It will be a good signing, he’s a good player.”

Bailey has signed a contract with Villa until 2025 and manager Dean Smith is excited to have signed him, telling Aston Villa club media: “Leon is a hugely exciting young striker with great pace and creativity. He has enjoyed a successful career at Leverkusen, and we are now looking forward to watching him show his skills and talents for Aston Villa in the Premier League.”

Aston Villa weren’t the only Premier League side interested in Bailey, as both Manchester United and Chelsea have been linked with a move for the attacker in the past, and also Bailey was touted as being a potential target for Ligue One side Paris Saint-Germain, according to Goal.

With Dean Smith adding further quality to his side this summer, everybody connected with Aston Villa will be hoping for another successful season in the Premier League this season and try to improve on last season’s 11th-placed finish.
