Rory Wilson could save Aston Villa millions

After a superb campaign with Preston North End last season, Cameron Archer has been the name on many Aston Villa fans’ lips this summer, but Steven Gerrard may have another top striker waiting in the wings at Bodymoor Heath in Rory Wilson.

Archer would hit seven goals on loan in the Championship last season before announcing himself with England U’21s, where he scored four goals in four games in European qualifying.

Gerrard made the decision to keep the 20-year-old at Villa this summer despite serious interest from the Championship and he has come off the bench in two of Villa’s Premier League games so far this season, while he also appeared in the League Cup win against Bolton.

Therefore, it is easy to see why there is so much excitement surrounding Archer, but Gerrard can also rely on Wilson to become a top talent in a Villa shirt, with the 16-year-old already catching the eye following his summer switch from Rangers.

In three appearances for Villa U’18s, Wilson has two goals, while he also earned a recent call-up to Scotland U’21s, despite being five years younger than some of his teammates, which suggests that he has the potential to save Villa millions on signing a big striker in a few years time if he can realise his obvious potential.

Does Wilson have a big future with Villa?

No

Former Scotland man Brian McLaughlin lauded Wilson after he helped Scotland U’17s qualify for the European Championships earlier in the summer.

He said:

“So Rory is leading the line as a 2006 against big powerful 2005s.

“But he is a clever player, his touch is good, his attitude is superb and his finishing .. for a young boy to be able to finish the way he can finish, just clinical and calm in front of goals.

“He knows he is always going to get a chance because his movement gives him that.

“It was another top performance from him and even when we put him on the left to give another young boy a chance off the bench it wasn’t a problem because he knows he can score off the left.”

While it could be some time before we see Wilson in the senior side, the teenage forward looks to have a huge amount of potential and is already impressing against players much older than himself, so he is certainly one for Villans to be excited about.
