Aston Villa finally called time on Steven Gerrard’s career in the Midlands after last night's defeat, and now could look to another Premier League manager to replace him…

What’s the latest?

According to The Athletic journalist Gregg Evans, Brentford boss Thomas Frank might be in line for the job.

He took to Twitter to issue the following update late last night:

“Nassef Sawiris was at #FFC tonight and left early into the defeat.

“Understand Thomas Frank is now under consideration as #AVFC weigh up the next move. Steven Gerrard left the stadium on the team coach after his sacking.”

The rumour mill will now begin to swirl with regard to the vacancy at such a prestigious club.

He would be perfect for them

His sacking had felt like a long time coming, as his side had slumped with each passing week closer and closer to the relegation zone. They now sit just a place above it, only safe due to goals scored.

It marked their ninth game where they had managed just one win and a second straight defeat. His job had become untenable.

The man who they might now turn to ticks all the boxes of being a progressive modern coach with fresh ideas, an exciting brand of football and is able to recruit well as the German has made such a success out of the Bees with these methods.

Having first joined as an assistant coach, the club took a chance on Frank to step up and take the reins following the departure of Dean Smith to Villa Park

He made steady progress, reaching mid-table in his first season, the playoffs the season following and eventually promotion in the 2021 playoff final.

The 49-year-old has since earned widespread praise for his supposed overperformance and consistent performances in the Premier League.

Even Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp noted that he had created “something special”, capable of producing “entertaining” moments.

"Absolutely great. I watched their press conference and it was one of the most entertaining things I've watched in years with Thomas Frank. Their football and organisation is incredible. How they recruit, with less money they can create something special," he told reporters (via journalist Paul Gorst).

Since joining England’s top flight, he boasts a record of 16 wins, 12 draws and 21. For a side with the lowest net spend of any club over the last five years this marks a sensational job well done.

Sitting 10th now after 11 games, he would be the perfect man to turn around the Villa rut and get them playing great football again, all whilst climbing the table, so Sawiris and Wes Edens must look to prize him away from Brentford as soon as possible.
