Aston Villa: Emi Buendia was excellent against Burnley

Aston Villa took a step closer to the top half of the Premier League table with a crucial 3-1 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor today.

The result is damaging for the home side’s hopes of remaining in the top flight, whereas Villa are unbeaten in three and Steven Gerrard will be glad that momentum is building.

Danny Ings opened the scoring after only seven minutes and respected his former club with a muted celebration.

Emi Buendia doubled the away side’s advantage with a cool side-foot finish which took a deflection off James Tarkowski before Ollie Watkins put the icing on the cake with a well-taken header which ultimately wrapped up the points with just over 35 minutes remaining.

A late Burnley consolation goal had no impact on the result and Villa remain in 11th place ahead of their clash with Liverpool on Tuesday night.

Will Aston Villa finish in the top half this season?

The star of the show was undoubtedly Buendia, who received an 8.5 rating on SofaScore, the highest in the Villa side.

Buendia was a ‘warrior’ v Burnley

The midfielder – who Gerrard dubbed his “little warrior” earlier this year, ran the match today – and his statistics were excellent.

The 25-year-old took 45 touches, scored once and provided the assist for Ings to score the opener. He also completed 25 of his 28 passes during the match and won four out of six duels throughout his 80-minute spell on the pitch.

Which club did Villa sign Leon Bailey from in the 2021 summer transfer window?

It’s fair to say that Buendia was the best player on the park and he was vital in both attacking and defensive elements as Villa claimed two wins in a row for only the second time this year.

Based on this performance today, Gerrard should be building the team around the Argentina dynamo if he is aiming to take the club to new levels next season.
