The Villans were quite busy in 2019/20, breaking their transfer record twice in quick succession. Before the current campaign kicked in, Darren Bent was the holder of that title ever since his transfer from Sunderland in 2010/11 for £19.3m. But then, Dean Smith went on a spree and two huge transfers followed suit.
Both Wesley and Tyrone Mings were signed in July 2019 with the former player penning his deal barely a week before his future teammate. Wesley’s transfer is still Aston Villa’s most expensive purchase that stands at £22.5m but Mings’ £20m is also not that far behind either.
But 2019/20 was also full of other expensive signings as the Villans bought their fourth and fifth most expensive players in Douglas Luiz from Man City and Matt Targett from Southampton.
There have undoubtedly been plenty of famous players donning the colours of the Villans over the years and it’s quite difficult to pick only the very best ones. From Christian Benteke to Gareth Southgate himself, Aston Villa have been a home for many greats of the beautiful game.
In modern times, the transfer of John McGinn from Hibernian in August 2018 is still one of the most influential ones to date and so are Mings’ and even that of John Terry in July 2017. We could also include Tom Heaton putting pen to paper in 2019, joining the Villans from Burnley.
