Aston Villa made the right call by opting to sign Emiliano Martinez instead of Aaron Ramsdale in the summer transfer window.

What was the story?

With Dean Smith's side suffering problems in the goalkeeping area after Tom Heaton's lengthy injury, it was no surprise to see Villa target a new shot-stopper in the window.

Reports claimed that despite Ramsdale edging closer to a switch to Sheffield United, Villa were interested in making a late move for the Englishman, and that they had made an enquiry about him.

In the end, Ramsdale left Bournemouth to join the Blades, whilst Smith got a new number one goalkeeper in Arsenal's Emiliano Martinez.

Right call by Smith

Costing a reported £18.5m, Ramsdale's a price is a hefty one given that Bournemouth had just been relegated from the Premier League, and clubs all over the world feeling the pinch.

In fact, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher made it abundantly clear that the Blades may have missed a trick with the signing of the goalkeeper, saying: "It’s not great business. I saw Chris Wilder try to dress it up after as decent business before, as you would do in that position.

"The price they’ve got him for, as a young English goalkeeper, I don’t think he’s quite as good as Henderson. Maybe that might cost Sheffield United slightly this season. Chris Wilder mentioned Gareth Southgate has been in touch with him - there were three goalkeepers in the last squad, he wasn't one of them but he's next in line after that. He'll have to have a good season this season if he is to break that top three."

And with Villa ending up snaring a goalkeeper that started and helped win both the FA Cup and Community Shield, there's no questioning they got the better calibre of player.

Martinez could reasonably feel he could still be playing at Arsenal given his impact, and the fact that Villa have got him speaks volumes about the quality of player they have got.
