According to The Daily Mail, Aston Villa are facing a battle to keep hold of academy starlet Aaron Ramsey.
After Villa’s kids put in a sterling performance against Premier League champions Liverpool in the FA Cup third round last week, a lot of eyes are naturally on the club’s abundance of rising talents.
And one of those touted for a big future is Ramsey, whose older brother Jacob is already beginning to make strides into Dean Smith’s first-team.
But, according to The Daily Mail, the 17-year-old Aaron, may not be at Villa for too long. The report claims that with the teenager’s contract at the club coming to an end this season, teams are beginning to circle over potentially landing his signature, with the likes of Celtic and Ajax being mentioned.
It is added however, that Villa remain keen on offering Ramsey fresh terms, and are hopeful that he will put pen to paper on a new deal.
With the feel-good factor that was created by Villa’s young lions in the FA Cup last time out, it would be an unforgivable mistake from Johan Lange to let one of the club’s brightest young talents walk away.
Players who come through the academy system to make their mark on the first-team like a Jack Grealish, always resonates that little bit more with the fans.
And in Ramsey, Villa have got a superb talent on their hands. Smith described him and his brother Jacob as “two talented players who we believe have a lot of potential”, with Aaron actually even captaining England’s U17 side previously.
The Athletic revealed that he’s more of a “fiery character” than Jacob, with one source saying he “wears his heart on his sleeve”. With the likes of Grealish, and even more recently Louie Barry, Villa have got a couple of outstanding academy break-outs.
Letting Ramsey go on a free transfer, and without seeing what he can actually do for Smith, would be a major error on Lange’s part. He has to sort out a new contract for him immediately.
