Aston Villa leading the race to sign Lucas Digne

Aston Villa are the latest side to register an interest in Everton’s wantaway left-back Lucas Digne, with Steven Gerrard’s side looking to make a bid.

What’s the story?

According to The Daily Mail, Villa are considering making a bid for the 28-year-old whose situation at Goodison Park has grown increasingly unpleasant.

The Frenchman fell out with manager Rafa Benitez and hasn’t played a minute of football for the Toffees since their 4-1 derby defeat to Liverpool on 1 December.

Who did Aston Villa beat in their 1st Premier League win of 2021?

Digne has attracted interest from numerous Premier League suitors, however, Fabrizio Romano has tweeted that both Chelsea and Newcastle who had been previously linked are now unlikely to sign, meaning that there could be a pathway for the left-back to Villa Park.

A fresh update from Sky Sports Journalist Rob Dorsett on Sunday evening, meanwhile, claimed the following:

AVFC look to have beaten comp from Chelsea, West Ham and Newcastle – now in advanced negotiations with Everton for Lucas Digne. Chelsea have not pursued initial interest. Digne prefers Villa over other options. Fee to be agreed – probs between £20-25m. Personal terms not expected to be a prob.”

Villa fans will be buzzing

It is no secret that Aston Villa are in need of reinforcements in the full-back department, with Matt Targett, Ashley Young and Matty Cash the club’s only senior full-backs.

Moreover, Young has been deployed in a variety of positions this season whilst Targett’s performances have been mixed, scoring against Palace but then churning out performances below a WhoScored rating of 6.6 against Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool.

Thus, Digne would certainly step into that Villa lineup with ease, an eventuality that would leave the Villa Park faithful buzzing with excitement.

Steven Gerrard’s side were targeting a move for 19-year-old Bologna left-back Aaron Hickey, however, The Athletic’s Gregg Evans has since confirmed that a move for the Scotsman this window is unlikely.

In the Everton defender, however, they have the perfect remedy. He has been superb since moving to England, scoring six goals and assisting an eye-catching 20 strikes.

The Villans have already made one major signing with Gerrard’s former Liverpool teammate Philippe Coutinho joining on loan from Barcelona for the remainder of the campaign which could prove to be a lure for Digne to favour a move to Villa Park.
