Aston Villa have had a rather busy January transfer window when it comes to adding new players to their squad such as Robin Olsen, Philippe Coutinho, Lucas Digne and Calum Chambers.
With deadline day approaching, it seems as though the Midlands club could have a tense ending to the month in terms of trying to secure yet another new player for Steven Gerrard's side.
What's the latest?
According to a recent Twitter post from journalist David Ornstein, Villa now face "significant competition" for the transfer of Juventus midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur from French club Lyon.
Ornstein also added that the Midlands side are still in the frame to sign the 24-year-old before the January transfer window closes, but Lyon apparently have a "strong relationship" with Juventus and hope to strike a deal for Bentancur as well.
In 181 appearances for Juventus across all competitions, the £22.5m-rated ace has scored three goals, provided 18 assists, won numerous trophies and played a healthy amount of games in the Champions League, highlighting the sort of pedigree that he would be able to bring to Villa.
Fans will be worried
Having been linked with a move for the Uruguayan over the past few days, this late intervention from Lyon which could potentially scupper Villa's chances of signing him will surely worry a lot of fans who may have been excited at the prospect of seeing the Juventus midfielder make his way to Villa Park this month.
Moving forward, if Villa are serious about signing Bentancur, they will need to make sure that they do everything they can to secure a deal for him and bring him to England, whether that be in a financial sense in terms of his wages or transfer fee to Juventus, or convincing him that a move to Villa would be a better next step for his career.
Taking into account how they spent £25m to sign Digne from Everton earlier in the month, it's safe to say that Villa are not averse to spending considerable money to land their targets. That should give them a good chance of being able to strike a deal for Bentancur which will be financially suitable for Juventus.
