According to Football Insider, Aston Villa are not planning on offering Ahmed Elmohamady a new contract this summer.

What's the story?

The Egyptian's contract with Dean Smith's side comes to an end this summer, and it now appears that Villa have no intention of renewing his current deal.

Football Insider claim that Smith is looking to let the veteran defender go, and plans to have Frederic Guilbert - who is currently out on loan - as Matty Cash's main competition for that starting right-back slot.

Sawiris may be relieved

The Egypt international has largely been on the periphery of things in the Premier League for Dean Smith's side, making just five appearances in the competition until mid-February - a real indication of where he stands in the pecking order.

But, with Cash ruled out through injury, the 33-year-old has come back into the fold, starting and completing the full 90 minutes in the past three matches for Villa.

However, Elmohamady has come in for some criticism from his own manager for his lacklustre displays, with Smith singling him out for his role in Leicester's goal in a 2-1 defeat to the Foxes.

Then, against Sheffield United on Wednesday night, he produced a shocking display, and one that surely would have left his manager worried.

It's no surprise then that reports have emerged that Smith is willing to let him go, and considering he earns a relatively hefty £45k-a-week wage packet for basically sitting on the bench this season and isn't at all good enough, it may have Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens relieved.

It'll get his wages off the books and allow Villa to better streamline their squad ahead of next season.

It would be a ruthless call to get rid of a player who has played 124 times for the Midlands club, including a key figure in their promotion-winning campaign, but it's one that has to be made.
