According to The Athletic, Aston Villa have made a second bid for Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
The Argentine has been the subject of major transfer interest in recent weeks, following a superb run of form in between the sticks for the Gunners.
The 6 foot 4 shot-stopper took on the number one goalkeeping duties at the Emirates after an injury to Bernd Leno, with Martinez starting both the FA Cup final and Community Shield victories.
Now, The Athletic claim that Villa have lodged a second offer for the Gunners ace, with this latest bid “substantially closer to Arsenal’s £20m asking price”. However, it remains to be seen whether Dean Smith’s side can bring him in, with the north Londoners keen on ensuring they have a replacement lined up first.
Such has been Martinez’s meteoric rise, that if he were to stay the Emirates for the upcoming season and play week-in and week-out for a top-four chasing team like Arsenal, nobody would bat an eyelid.
If Villa could clinch the Argentine’s signing, then they would be getting one of the finest goalkeepers in the Premier League – at least on the form he showed in the months after Leno’s injury.
Former West Ham goalkeeper called him “outstanding“, whilst ex-Villa man Tony Cascarino raved about his performances too. He said: “Emiliano Martínez at Arsenal looks to me like a keeper who knows where his posts are, and that transmits a sense of calm to the defenders around him.”
With Tom Heaton ruled out via injury for the start of the upcoming campaign, bringing in someone of the calibre of Martinez would be a huge coup for Villa and their chances of survival.
