That is according to Alex Crook, via GIVEMESPORT, who claims that Steven Gerrard and Aston Villa’s priority target could be the Brighton midfielder
When asked about Villa’s summer business, Crook said: “I think probably Bissouma (will be Gerrard’s top target) because of that Premier League experience, which I think is important. Kamara as well is someone they’ve been looking at for a while. So, those two would be quite high (on Villa’s list).”
The latest news comes just as Douglas Luiz is approaching the final year of his contract, amidst reported links with Arsenal.
Gerrard is said to be in the market for a new defensive midfielder and if the Villa boss wants to secure the services of Bissouma, as is believed, it could cost around £50m.
With his defensive acumen the shining light to his game, Bissouma’s ability to keep the ball is also a plus point, especially for a Villa side who have struggled in that department and have achieved 46.2% in terms of average possession this season.
Gerrard is entirely correct in looking at signing a player of the Malian’s calibre, especially when you bear in mind the fact that Aston Villa rank 16th in the league for interceptions per match, 18th for clearances per match and 20th (last place) for possession won in the final third per match.
25-year-old brute Bissouma, who has been dubbed “exceptional” by Gary Lineker can help to rectify this issue, with his average of 2.34 interceptions, and 2.17 clearances per match enough to boost the defensive stability of the Villa engine room.
Ironically, Bissouma betters that of PSG’s Idrissa Gueye for both of these metrics, though it is worth noting that the Senegalese is more well-rounded and offers more offensively at this current moment.
Gueye was a superb performer for the Villans during his time in the Midlands and they have arguably lacked a player of his defensive acumen since. For instance, he completed a whopping 4.1 tackles per game for Villa, a statistic that Bissouma has come fairly close to in 2021/22, making three per match.
With that in mind, the Seagulls brute seems the perfect man to finally replace the now PSG star.
