The Athletic‘s Gregg Evans has dropped a major Aston Villa update on the club’s summer transfer plans, including some news on the future of Jack Grealish amid speculation linking him with Manchester City.
Reports in recent days have suggested that the Premier League champions are preparing an offer for the 25-year-old after the conclusion of Euro 2020 this summer, while Dean Smith’s side have already completed the signings of Emi Buendia and Ashley Young.
Evans has now delivered an update on where things stand with Villa’s work in the transfer market, even suggesting that new signings are being told of Grealish staying at the club.
He said: “Signing another attacking player is very much the priority. It’s the position where Villa are willing to throw another sizeable chunk of money. The club are also telling players of interest that Grealish will be sticking around — which, for now, is the case — but Manchester City’s interest is growing.
“Smith believes strengthening up top is the key to future success. Villa want another attacker on board before the season starts and that’s likely to be the biggest remaining deal of the summer. Defensive midfield is an area Villa would like to bolster, but they may look for either a cheaper deal to plug the gap, or bring in a player with one eye on moving others on.”
Make no mistake about it, the news that Villa are still going on with their transfer business like normal, and are informing their targets that plans are being made with Grealish “sticking around”, must be music to the ears of the club’s supporters.
A gigantic bid from Manchester City and the chances of losing the playmaker is a worrying one, but for Villa to be using Grealish staying as a carrot to convince new players to join suggests they are fully intent on keeping him at the club.
The signings of Buendia and Young should also have already shown the England international that Villa are serious about strengthening their squad around him, and actions speak louder than words.
Evans’ update that they are still looking to reinforce the squad in key areas should have Villa fans absolutely buzzing.
