Just recently, Aston Villa were linked with a surprise move for Atletico Madrid's star, Kieran Trippier. The Telegraph claimed Dean Smith wants to bring in the full-back either on loan or even on a permanent deal if possible.

Of course, we still don't know whether Diego Simeone would actually be open to letting his star leave but there is no escaping the fact that the Villains are showing ambition with this approach.

And according to their former star, Darren Bent, they should go all-in and secure this signing. If his words are anything to go by, Trippier would be an instant improvement and a brilliant signing.

Here's what he said exclusively for Football Insider: "I’m all for that. That would be a brilliant signing for Villa, they need a bit of that. They need a bit of experience in there and I think he is top drawer.

"He’s an England international, he’s played in the Champions League final so he’s played at the highest level. For me, that would be brilliant, I think he’s better than what they’ve got at Aston Villa."

Trippier himself played 33 games for the Madrid team across all competitions in 2019/20 but has also struggled with niggling injuries at the very beginning of the campaign.

Still, he did help Atletico secure a third-place finish in La Liga and also played a part in shocking Liverpool at Anfield in the Champions League.

Verdict

We shouldn't forget that Trippier already has Premier League experience, having played 114 times in all competitions for Tottenham Hotspur before eventually moving to Spain.

His quality should also not be underestimated as the 29-year-old still has a lot to offer at the very highest level. After all, not every full-back can secure a position in Simeone's well-oiled machine over in La Liga.

Getting him would undoubtedly be quite a scoop.
