According to Eurosport, Aston Villa are leading the race to sign Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge.
Despite strengthening the centre of midfield in the January transfer window with the arrival of Morgan Sanson, it appears Dean Smith is keen on further revamping his options in the middle of the park.
According to Eurosport, Villa are one of the clubs to keep a keen eye on Berge’s situation with the Blades, with the Norway international potentially becoming available if Chris Wilder’s men get relegated from the Premier League this season.
The report adds that Villa are the “early favourites” to land the £16.2m-rated star’s signature.
Given how Sheffield United are rooted to the bottom of the table and are on a way-ticket to relegation back to the Championship, targeting players from the Blades seems like the shrewd move to make.
The Blades may be forced into selling some of their star players who are intent on playing Premier League football, and Villa’s sporting director, Johan Lange could take advantage of that by making a move for Berge.
And given his potential availability and style of play, Berge seems like he could be a very good signing for Villa.
Taste of Football wrote in their analytical report about him: “On multiple occasions, he is seen skipping past the opposition, either with a flick around the corner or an elegant dribble. Hardly what you expect from such a giant in midfield. Berge also has finesse to his game. Reminiscent of a young Sergio Busquets, a testament to how easy he makes the game look.”
And, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta’s assistant, Albert Stuivenberg, said about him: “He is already very mature. He is intelligent, reads the game well, and takes the initiative. He has the potential to become a future leader.”
If Lange can fend off the competition and seal a deal for Berge, it could be a masterstroke.
