Aston Villa are now eyeing a move for Tottenham and England midfielder Harry Winks amid a recent transfer update.
The England international has endured a difficult campaign in north London this year, falling out of favour under former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho and making just 15 appearances in the Premier League.
And now, The Telegraph claim that Winks is one of the players Dean Smith is eyeing a move for this summer as he looks to reinforce his midfield options ahead of the new season.
While a player who completely fell off the radar and made just 15 top-flight appearances last season hardly seems like the most inspiring of signings for Villa fans to get excited about, at just 25, Winks has still got plenty of time to revive his career.
The £18m-rated ace has previously drawn rave reviews from Mauricio Pochettino about his style of play, with the Argentine even comparing him to a couple of Spanish icons too.
He said: “Harry has the profile of the perfect midfield player. His characteristics are perfect. When we talk about midfielders like Xavi and (Andres) Iniesta, he’s like this type of player. He has this capacity but he needs to take my words in a very positive way — he needs a lot of work.”
While that Xavi comparison certainly seems far-fetched given how the Spurs midfielder’s career has stalled, Winks still hasn’t lost his calmness in possession and has averaged a superb career passing accuracy of 90% – far better than any Villa player who played more than 90 minutes last season in the Premier League.
Being able to retain possession and keep things ticking over in the middle of the park would give Smith’s side a bit more control in the engine room and help them build out from the back to feed the likes of Jack Grealish and Ollie Watkins further forward.
And, given what the Villa boss has recently said about what he wants from his new signings this summer ie young, British and with Premier League experience, Winks would surely be the kind of player that Smith would love to bring in.
Johan Lange could strike gold in the Spurs gem this summer.
