Sky Sports journalist Rob Dorsett has dropped a fresh transfer update on Aston Villa's pursuit of Everton defender Lucas Digne.

What's the story?

Reports in recent days have suggested that Steven Gerrard's side have been in negotiations with their fellow Premier League side over the France international, and there has been some significant developments over the past 24 hours.

Writing on Twitter on Tuesday night, The Athletic's David Ornstein initially said: "Everton have approached Aston Villa to sign Anwar El Ghazi. No agreement for 26yo #NED winger but #EFC know valuation & talks continue over permanent/loan. Not linked to #AVFC Lucas Digne pursuit which is advancing positively but not done."

Then, later on Wednesday morning, Sky Sports' Dorsett revealed: "EXCL: #avfc have now agreed a fee with #efc for left back Lucas Digne. Deal worth up to £25m. Several days of negotiations, in which Villa have beaten off interest from #cfc, #whufc and #nufc. Digne is due in Birmingham later today to undergo a medical.  Big window for Villa."

Fans will be buzzing

Well that has certainly moved fast.

Just when Villa fans might have been excused for trying to get their head around signing a marquee player like Philippe Coutinho, their club have stolen a march on some Premier League big hitters like Chelsea to land Digne.

The Everton man had been touted with a switch to Stamford Bridge earlier this month, but it appears Gerrard and his team have beaten them to the punch in agreeing a deal, with the French ace now set for a medical.

Adding Digne's signing to that of Coutinho, and that too in a short a space of time, sees Villa's squad improve considerably, especially considering their Premier League and international experience. Thus, it may ensure that they are well set up for a big finish in this second-half of the Premier League campaign.

Villa fans will surely be buzzing with the kind of decisiveness that they are acting with in the transfer market. After losing a player like Jack Grealish last summer, this is just the ticket to make up for that.

Meanwhile, Villa are interested in this record-breaking starlet...
