Aston Villa have been linked with a move for Marcus Thuram over the last few weeks and now a new update has emerged on the club’s pursuit of the player ahead of the transfer window opening this week.

What’s the latest?

According to 90min, Aston Villa have held talks with representatives of the France and Borussia Monchengladbach forward ahead of the January transfer window.

As per the report, many Premier League clubs have made contact with interest in the popular goal machine with Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United named alongside Villa.

It’d be a major coup

There is no doubt that the signing of Thuram would be a major coup for Unai Emery in his pursuit to improve Villa’s Premier League campaign over the second half of the season.

The Villains are currently 12th in the league table following their defeat to Liverpool on Boxing Day and will return to action against Spurs on New Year’s Day.

Emery will surely be hoping that he will be given the opportunity to strengthen the squad when his first transfer window as Villa boss commences on Sunday, and Thuram would be a great start in making his mark at the club.

The talented Frenchman - who was hailed “exceptional” by Daniel Farke - has scored 41 goals and delivered 26 assists over 119 appearances for Gladbach with a goal contribution every 119 minutes, proving that he is a consistent and reliable goal threat.

Over 15 Bundesliga appearances so far, Thuram has scored 10 goals, registered three assists and completed 67% of his dribbles, as well as averaging 3.7 shots on goal and 4.6 duels won per game.

Not only that, the World Cup whiz - valued by his club this winter at €11.3m (£10m) - ranks in the top 10% of his positional peer across the top five European leagues for non-penalty goals, shots on goal and dribbles completed over the last 12 months, further confirming that he is one of the top attacking players in Europe right now.

If Thuram could continue his form in front of goal over in the Premier League via Villa Park, it could be a huge boost to the goal contributions and attacking threat for Emery over the remainder of the campaign.

With that being said, Villa will need to provide a competitive offer for Thuram to fend off their rivals for the signing of Thuram in January.
