Indeed, they are putting the final touches to a move that will be worth £20m once add-ons are included.

And he will multiply his wages three fold by leaving north London, having agreed personal terms with the club.

Spotrac claims that Martinez currently earns £20,000-per-week at the Emirates Stadium, meaning he is set to pocket around £60,000-per-week at Villa Park.

Big wages for Arsenal star

These are big wages for Villa to be throwing around but one has to feel that Martinez is worth it.

At the age of 28, the Argentine remains relatively young for a goalkeeper, and he proved his worth last season as he took on the mantle of first-choice from Bernd Leno.

He made eight starts in the Premier League, conceding just nine times, while he also shipped just three goals in the FA Cup en route to winning the trophy, including clean sheets against Manchester City and Chelsea.

Pepe Reina was primarily Villa’s goalkeeper after his arrival in January – making 12 starts from a possible 16 – but he has now moved to Lazio.

That opens up a squad slot and Martinez would be a superb replacement for the ex-Liverpool man.

Big wages or not, this is a fine deal for Villa, and one that enhances their chances of remaining in the top-flight in 2020/21.
