This is the transfer window that keeps on giving for Aston Villa and it seems as if signing Lucas Digne and Philippe Coutinho isn’t enough for Steven Gerrard and Johan Lange.
That’s because they’ve reportedly tabled an offer to sign one of the game’s most free-scoring players.
The winter market has so far been a great success for Villa’s recruitment team but they could be set to end it with a bang in the final weeks of the window.
According to reports in Spain, the Midlands outfit are one of the clubs in the running to sign ex-Liverpool striker and one of Gerrard’s old teammates, Luis Suarez.
Reporter Gerard Romero said on Twitter: “Luis Suarez has ruled out offers from Palmeiras, Corinthians and Atlético Mineiro -as well as one from Arabia- to focus on Aston Villa’s offer from his former teammate Gerrard.”
This would be a magical way to end the window and would cement Gerrard truly as a manager who can lure the very best in world football to Villa Park.
They have been lingering in mid-table since returning to the top-flight but if you combine Suarez with Digne and Coutinho, it could well and truly make them contenders to reach European football.
The acquisition of Coutinho was seriously impressive as the Brazilian, who was once sold to Barcelona for £142m, is a marvellous player, something that is summed up by his 42 goals and 37 assists in Premier League.
However, his spell at Barca was rather less eye-catching, bagging 25 strikes and 14 assists which for a player who cost as much as he did, isn’t the best return.
During his stint in Catalonia, the Uruguayan forward found the net on 172 occasions, while also registering 83 assists.
Those are staggering numbers and top things off, he’s scored another 30 times in 65 outings since moving to Atletico Madrid.
Based on that, he’d be an inspired signing by the Villans, one that could really help them compete with the best in the top-flight.
