Aston Villa could turn their attention to another winger after missing out on Ismaila Sarr…
“The Sarr move apparently didn’t work out because of Gerrard’s decision to go against the move, so it’s got to be someone that Gerrard prefers,” he said.
“You could look at potentially Ryan Kent at Rangers. They’ve obviously worked together and I think he’s proven himself the last couple of games against PSV [Eindhoven] with his quality.”
The former Liverpool academy gem is thought to have a £20m release clause in his £18k-per-week contract at Ibrox, which would be cheaper than the £25m that the Villans had agreed on with Watford for Sarr.
Ever since the record £100m departure of club legend Jack Grealish to multi-time Premier League winners Manchester City, the Midlands outfit have struggled immensely, narrowly avoiding a relegation scrap last campaign to their early season struggles this term.
Gerrard’s men have won just one of their opening four matches and find themselves one point above the drop zone and whilst it’s still early days, there are worrying signs emerging.
Villa’s two front men – Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings – as well as versatile midfielder Emi Buendia are the three names to have scored in the top-flight, meaning players such as Leon Bailey, Philippe Coutinho and Jacob Ramsey are yet to contribute anything of note.
Kent could be the man to finally fix that problem, particularly given his past success with Gerrard.
The pair clinched the Scottish Premiership title together in 2020 as Gers went unbeaten the whole season. The 25-year-old dynamo delivered an impressive 13 goals and 15 assists across 53 appearances in all competitions, including contributions in the Europa League, as per Transfermarkt.
He has since continued that rich vein of form north of the border, delivering an eye-watering 19 assists last season alone.
Also lauded as “electric“, Kent could be exactly what Gerrard needs to transform the club’s attacking fortunes on the pitch and you’d imagine that he’d need little time to settle in as he already knows the manager very well.
Perhaps the Teddy Bears star can be the new Grealish at Villa Park – he certainly has the attacking exploits to replicate his form for the team.
