Celtic: Ange Postecoglou must unleash James Forrest vs Hearts

Celtic turn their attention back to the Scottish Premiership on Saturday as they travel away to play Hearts after securing a place in the semi-finals of the League Cup.

Ange Postecoglou’s side swept Motherwell aside with ease in the quarter-final of the competition on Wednesday night, beating them 4-0 on their own turf.

The Australian coach made a few changes to the starting XI to offer players a chance to stake a claim for a place in the starting XI moving forward and one star who caught the eye was Liel Abada.

He scored two goals from out wide on the right, with Reo Hatate and Kyogo Furuhashi completing the scoring, but the manager must forget about the Israel international for now and unleash James Forrest from the start.

Celtic face seventh-placed Hearts away from home and Postecoglou should name Forrest in the XI ahead of Abada because of his sensational performance last time out in the Premiership.

The Hoops veteran put in a stunning display against Hibernian in the club’s last league match as he plundered three goals and provided three key passes in just 65 minutes on the pitch during the 6-1 win.

He had not scored in any of his three appearances in the division prior to that game and the manager must now offer him the chance to build on his performance by starting him against Hearts.

Forrest has to prove that he can now provide quality in the final third on a consistent basis, rather than the Hibs rout being a one-off, and that is why he should be in from the start on Saturday.

First up in this Celtic transfer quiz, which club did Celtic sign Christopher Jullien from?

The long-serving gem, who journalist Stefan Bienkowski once dubbed “underrated“, was also recently described as a Celtic “legend” by teammate Josip Juranovic and it is difficult to argue that when you look at his statistics over the years.

He has scored 101 goals and assisted 99 in 451 matches for the club in all competitions in his career to date, after coming through the academy set-up.

This means that he could hit a century of assists, after reaching the milestone for goals against Hibernian, against Hearts. It would be a phenomenal achievement and one that his form in the club’s last outing in the top-flight suggests that he has a strong chance of achieving.

The £19k-per-week gem should be riding on the crest of a wave after his last performance and Postecoglou must now lean on that by unleashing him ahead of Abada this weekend.
