Celtic: Ange Postecoglou must unleash Osaze Urhoghide

Having joined Celtic in what was a £207k move this summer, it will have perhaps come as a surprise to Hoops fans that they are yet to see a great deal of Osaze Urhoghide in action at Parkhead.

Indeed, the centre-back was linked with a number of high-profile clubs before his move to Celtic, with Premier League sides Leeds United and Crystal Palace both thought to have been keen on the highly-rated 21-year-old, while Ange Postecoglou also appeared to be extremely excited about the youngster’s ability at the time of his signing.

Can you guess which Celtic player scored the most goals during the season in question? Let's start with 2010/11...

Discussing Urhoghide’s potential, the Hoops manager said: “He can play a couple of positions at the back and, importantly, he’s really keen to learn and develop and I think this will be a great environment for him. He’s a modern defender. He’s good athletically, he’s mobile, he’s quick and he wants to get on the ball.”

Although, despite the high expectations, the defender has made just one appearance for Postecoglou’s first team so far this season, coming in a 3-1 defeat against Greenock Morton in the Challenge Cup – with reports suggesting that the 56-year-old does not believe that the centre-back is currently up to the standard required to feature in the first team, while some even claim that the Hoops could be looking to move the defender out on loan in January.

However, with the recent injury to Carl Starfelt leaving Postecoglou with something of a selection headache in the heart of his defence over the next few weeks, it would appear extremely wise for the Celtic manager to finally unleash Urhoghide in the league before he comes to a decision regarding the former Sheffield Wednesday man’s immediate future at Parkhead.

Indeed, the £270k-rated man proved that he is more than capable of turning in impressive performances at senior level over his 16 Championship appearances for the Owls last season, in which he helped his side keep three clean sheets, in addition to making an average of 1.6 interceptions, 1.8 tackles, 2.7 clearances and winning 5.8 duels per game.

As such, with Starfelt’s injury providing Postecoglou with an opportunity to afford the man who Darren Moore dubbed an “immense” defender some first-team minutes, the 56-year-old manager must finally unleash the centre-back for Celtic, as the 21-year-old clearly has the ability to become a regular part of the Bhoys backline for years to come – something that could save the club millions of pounds in transfer fees in the future.
