Celtic are reportedly not looking to secure a summer transfer for Manchester City midfielder Claudio Gomes.
In a recent post on Twitter, journalist Mark Hendry said on the matter: “This link made a bit of sense considering City Football Group, but not on the cards.”
Hendry also wrote in a recent report for Football.Scotland that rumours linking the midfielder with a move to Parkhead are ‘wide of the mark’.
After spending time in Paris Saint-Germain’s youth ranks, the Frenchman joined City’s under-23 side in 2018. Since then, the 22-year-old has made 42 appearances for the Manchester club across their senior and youth teams, chipping in with four assists along the way.
However, this period away from the Etihad Stadium has proven that it’s probably for the best that Celtic aren’t looking to sign him.
From a defensive point of view, things weren’t much better for the midfielder as he made just 23 interceptions and won 15 tackles, fewer that a significant number of players at the club, who were ultimately relegated from the English second tier.
His overall performances earned him a rather underwhelming season rating of 6.36/10 from WhoScored, leaving 17 other players at Barnsley with higher ratings.
Taking all this into account, it’s safe to say that Gomes did not show that he has what it takes to be a useful addition to Ange Postecoglou’s side, who will be looking to retain the Premiership title and perform well in the Champions League.
This will likely make Hendry’s dismissal of the rumours linking the Frenchman with a move to Parkhead music to the ears of many Celtic supporters.
If the Scottish champions can get their hands on another defensive midfielder before the transfer window closes, this could round off what has been a rather productive summer in terms of recruitment for the Hoops.
