Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou is seemingly already looking ahead to the January window, with recent reports suggesting that the Parkhead outfit are particularly targeting a new midfield recruit when the market re-opens.
Amid that search to bolster the club’s options in the centre of the park, the one-time Australia head coach could well be frustrated at seeing a former Hoops midfielder flourish elsewhere, with playmaker Olivier Ntcham currently starring for Swansea City.
The France-born, Cameroon international was allowed to depart Glasgow for nothing back in the summer of 2021 having reached the end of his contract at the club, although has since gone on to impress at the Liberty Stadium.
The 5 foot 11 sensation had originally made the move to Celtic Park back in 2017 from Premier League side Manchester City, going on to become a key figure for the Old Firm outfit after scoring 24 goals and providing 13 assists in 147 games across all fronts.
That haul included a notable strike to claim victory over Serie A side Lazio in the Europa League almost exactly three years ago, with that goal ensuring a first-ever win for the club on Italian soil.
Despite such moments of brilliance, Ntcham’s latter years at Paradise had been dogged by his desire to depart, having seemingly been keen on joining Portuguese outfit FC Porto in the summer of 2019, before again angling for a move a year later.
As it proved, the midfield maestro, who was notably dubbed a “disgrace” for some of his performances by pundit Noel Whelan, was ultimately allowed to join Ligue 1 giants Marseille on loan for the second half of the 2020/21 campaign, albeit with that move ultimately seeing coach Andre Villas-Boas hand in his resignation at the Stade Velodrome.
Upon his return to his parent club, the two-cap sensation then opted to make the move to Wales on a free transfer, with that decision having since more than paid off for both the player himself and his current club.
The 26-year-old has scored nine goals and provided five assists in 57 games for the Championship side over the past 12 months or so, having particularly caught the eye this season after scoring five times and laying on two assists in 19 league games.
That “hugely impressive” form – as described by journalist Ian Mitchelmore – has also seen the £14k-per-week ace earning an inclusion in Cameroon’s squad for the upcoming World Cup, providing him with the chance to showcase his talents on a global stage.
Such has been his displays of late, the in-form asset is now reportedly worth around £2m – according to Football Transfers – having potentially left those back at Celtic Park ruing their inability to keep him at the club.
That regret will only be enhanced if Ntcham goes on to sparkle in Qatar…
