Ange Postecoglou has dropped a promising update on Callum McGregor ahead of this evening's Old Firm clash.

What's the latest?

Speaking in his pre-match press conference (via Clyde 1 Superscoreboard), the Bhoys' boss revealed that, despite sustaining a facial injury that was initially reported to keep the central midfielder sidelined for up to two months, the Scotland international returned to first-team training on Tuesday.

The 56-year-old went on to suggest that, while he will have to make a late decision as to whether to include the 28-year-old in his matchday squad for the visit of Rangers, there could be a chance McGregor plays some sort of role in the Glasgow derby.

Speaking about the current condition of the midfielder, Postecoglou said: "Cal trained with the team [on Tuesday]. I'm not really sure [whether he'll be ready for the Rangers game] but I'll make a decision on that later."

Fans will be elated

Considering how important a part of Postecoglou's side McGregor is, in addition to the fact that it was originally reported that the Celtic captain could have been out of action for up to eight weeks, the surprising news that the midfielder has already returned to first-team training, and could even feature this evening, is sure to have left the Parkhead faithful elated.

Indeed, over his 18 Premiership appearances so far this season, the £6.75m-rated maestro has been in imperious form for the Bhoys, scoring one goal, registering two assists and creating three big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.8 shots and making 1.9 key passes per game.

The central midfielder has also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, making an average of 0.6 interceptions, 1.4 tackles, 72.7 passes and winning 53% of his duels per fixture.

These returns have seen the £30k-per-week Scot average a rather extraordinary SofaScore match rating of 7.31, ranking him as the joint seventh-best player in the entirety of the Scottish top flight.

As such, it is clear for all to see that McGregor's availability for this evening's fixture would undoubtedly provide Celtic's chances of picking up all three points against Rangers with a substantial boost - with a victory against the current league leaders very much having the potential to swing the title race back into the Hoops' favour.
