Celtic: Postecoglou handed potential injury boost ahead of Real Madrid

Celtic have been handed a potential injury boost ahead of their Champions League meeting with Real Madrid on Tuesday night.

What’s the latest?

In recent footage shared on Twitter by Sky Sports Scotland (via The Herald), Kyogo Furuhashi can be seen taking part in first-team training without the support of any shoulder strapping, despite the centre-forward having been substituted just four minutes into the 4-0 demolition of Rangers on Saturday afternoon as a result of an upper arm injury.

The 27-year-old’s involvement at Lennoxtown is sure to come as a huge boost to Ange Postecoglou, as, following the Old Firm victory, the 57-year-old manager appeared uncertain as to whether the Japan international would be available for selection for the visit of Madrid, stating in post-match comments cited by Glasgow Live:

“We’ll see how it is. It was a shoulder injury [for Kyogo]. Carl [Starfelt] had a niggle in his knee. It’s a bit of a blow because Kyogo has been in brilliant form so far this season. We’ll assess them after this.”

Great news for Postecoglou

Considering the quite remarkable form Kyogo has been in for Celtic so far this season – as Postecoglou himself stated – should the forward indeed be in line for an immediate return to action against Los Blancos on Tuesday evening, it would undoubtedly be great news for the Greek-Australian coach and his side.

Indeed, over his six Premiership fixtures in Celtic’s 2022/23 campaign, the £5.4m-rated striker has already scored six goals and registered one assist, as well as taking an average of 2.3 shots – 1.3 of which have hit the target – and completing 0.7 key passes per game – demonstrating the incredibly deadly final third form the 27-year-old has been in this term.

Do you think Celtic will get a result against Madrid?

These returns have seen the former Vissel Kobe star average a simply sensational SofaScore match rating of 7.68, ranking him as the joint second-best performer – behind only Jota and alongside Liel Abada – in the entirety of the Scottish top flight so far this season.

The £4.6m signing also impressed over his 20 league fixtures in the Bhoys’ 2021/22 campaign, as, despite missing 18 games due to injury, the Japanese hitman still managed to hit the back of the net a quite incredible 12 times last time out.

First up in this Celtic transfer quiz, which club did Celtic sign Christopher Jullien from?

As such, with tests not coming much more difficult than facing the reigning European champions in the opening group stage match of a Champions League campaign, it is evident that the availability of Celtic’s joint top scorer so far this season would come as a huge boost to the club’s chances of picking up a result against Madrid.

And, with Kyogo – who Postecoglou claimed adds “something special” to his side – looking to be injury free in the recent Sky Sports footage, it would appear as if there is a good chance that the centre-forward will be a part of the 57-year-old’s matchday squad at Parkhead tomorrow evening.
