Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has dropped an update on the injury sustained by Mikey Johnston last weekend.

What's the latest?

In recent comments cited by Football Scotland, the 56-year-old Bhoys boss revealed that the Celtic winger, who was withdrawn early in the second half of the Hoops' 4-0 Scottish Cup win over Raith Rovers on Sunday, picked up a knock to his ankle, before the Greek-Australian coach went on to suggest that he does not know how serious the 22-year-old's injury is.

Speaking about the condition of the former Scotland U21 international, Postecoglou said: "Mikey Johnston took a knock on his ankle. I'm not really sure how he is at the moment. The last time I said it wasn't serious it turned out that it was."

Fans will be gutted

Considering just how many injuries Johnston has picked up since fully breaking into the Celtic first team back in 2018/19, the news that the forward once again looks set to spend a spell on the sidelines is sure to have left the Parkhead faithful gutted.

Indeed, despite having been in and around the senior squad for three and a half years, the £900k-rated winger has so far started just 31 fixtures for the Bhoys, something which has led to many, including Frank McAvennie, questioning whether Johnston will ever make the grade at Celtic Park.

Speaking about the future of Johnstone, the former Celtic centre-forward said: "People have been waiting for Johnston to take that next step and he just hasn't done it. I know he's had injuries but he has never even looked like he will do it.

"I think a move away has to be the best thing for him now. He does have talent. I just think he's in the gap where he isn't good enough for Celtic but is still a talented boy. He's barely getting a game and when he does play he is really struggling.

"Sell him. I would like to see him moved on for the benefit of his own career. Ange gave him a chance with Jota out and he's not done anything. Some fans might disagree but he's simply not good enough for what Ange is trying to build."

And, considering the fact the £7.9k-per-week attacker who Joe Hart dubbed an "incredible" talent has scored no goals, provided no assists and averaged an extremely disappointing SofaScore match rating of just 6.84 over his 12 Premiership appearances so far this season - ranking him as Postecoglou's 10th-worst performer in the league - it is difficult to make an argument against McAvennie's opinion.

Indeed, should Johnston's injury end up keeping him out of action for a couple of months, the winger's appearance against Raith Rovers could well have been his last for the club, as, after being linked with a move away in January, it would not be a surprising outcome if Postecoglou were to look to move the 22-year-old on permanently this summer - something that would undoubtedly leave many fans gutted considering the forward's previous potential.
