Celtic have been linked with a rather baffling move for a former Championship flop this week…
According to Turkish outlet Haber, the Scottish Premiership winners are closing in on Trabzonspor striker Caleb Ekuban with the player set to undergo a medical in the coming days.
It’s claimed that the 26-year-old will cost the club around €8m (£7.6m) along with potential add-ons, although this has since been rubbished by Neil Lennon.
And that’s probably a good thing going by his time at Leeds United where he scored two goals from 21 appearances before being shipped on by Marcelo Bielsa.
The Argentine tactician watched the tape before being confirmed as the boss at Elland Road and decided he wasn’t good enough and that’s a decision that has paid dividends with Patrick Bamford firing the Whites back into the Premier League this season.
Ekuban came through the system at Serie A outfit Chievo Verona and during his time in Italy, he was likened to the controversial Mario Balotelli – presumably because of his pace and power on the field rather than his off-the-field antics.
But even then, he’s failed to live up to the same career.
The Ghanian international provided ten goals and 11 assists in all competitions this campaign, so perhaps it’s not a surprise to see his name linked with a move to a team as big as Celtic but it’s not particularly a move the club needs to make now.
Alban Ajeti joined from West Ham and has already made his mark, scoring the winner against Dundee on Saturday whilst no one’s getting in above Odsonne Edouard as starter anytime soon.
Noel Whelan’s U-turn on the striker shows why he’s not someone the Hoops should be pursuing as he went from being lauded as a striker with “unbelievable” speed to a player who’s “not good enough” for Leeds.
Bhoys chief Nick Hammond must steer clear of this swoop at all costs.
