Celtic blew a golden opportunity to extend their advantage to their fierce rivals at the top of the Premiership table on Sunday as the Hoops played out a goalless draw with Hibernian.

Ange Postecoglou's side were far from their best and after crashing out of a second European competition this term on Thursday, followed it up with a feeble display at Easter Road that was devoid of cutting edge and penetration.

Try as they might, Jota and Liel Abada attempted to make things happen down the flanks but their efforts towards goal were often lacklustre and fired into the crowd.

As for their creative efforts, very rarely did the ball find the feet or head of Japanese striker Daizen Maeda.

The January signing has shown glimpses of his enormous quality since arriving at Parkhead but unfortunately this weekend, he had a day to forget.

He failed to ever really offer himself as an option for Celtic's wide players and Postecoglou will no doubt be rather frustrated with his striker's efforts, especially in the absence of Giorgos Giakoumakis.

Maeda was an isolated figure for the vast majority of the 90 minutes and it was rather incredible that he wasn't substituted by the manager. After all, it was clear he wasn't offering much in the Australian's system.

From a statistical point of view, he was diabolical, losing 100% of the four duels that he contested. Furthermore, the Japan international completed only a mind-boggling four passes despite his time on the field while he also failed to have a single shot.

It was a rather shocking day at the office for the 24-year-old who in 16 touches of the ball, lost possession on seven occasions, once every 2.2 occasions.

This was a day where Hibernian were intent on holding firm and when Celtic needed a bit of ingenuity and pizazz, Maeda never really looked like performing a rescue act.

The position for the number 9 role in Postecoglou's team is hotly contested at the moment but once Giakoumakis and Kyogo Furuhashi are both fit, the latter's international colleague should be bunted down the pecking order.

His ability to influence proceedings against a low block or cause problems for the colossal Matt Macey in goal is surely a cause for concern.

AND in other news, Postecoglou could unearth Celtic's next Dembele by unleashing 17 y/o "wonderkid"...
