Celtic secured a comfortable win on Wednesday night over the bottom of the table Ross County. Neil Lennon continued to experiment with his squad after he chose to deploy two strikers at the top of his attack. Odsonne Edouard was joined by outcast Leigh Griffiths in the Hoops’ 2-0 victory.
Whilst the latter was on song for his team, his strike partner went under the radar. Edouard was hauled off the pitch after 72 minutes as he failed to make an impact on the game.
This isn’t peculiar of the Frenchman either. According to Transfermarkt, the 22-year-old has scored just one goal from open play in his last ten appearances for Celtic. He is currently a shadow of the man who shocked any opponent he faced last season, netting 21 goals in 27 appearances.
Edouard really struggled to get into his groove against Ross County. He managed to muster up a mere 18 accurate passes and won just three of his 11 attempted duels. The £19,000 per week striker also lost possession a total of 15 times before he was replaced by Mikey Johnston in the second half, as per Sofascore.
Edouard has been linked to a move away from Celtic Park after reports that he appears “unhappy” where he is. If this is the case, it is evident in his performances.
It seems like the 22-year-old has got one eye on the door as the January transfer window approaches. Lennon must consider benching Edouard and prioritising Griffiths instead as the Hoops move forward and try to chase down Rangers in the Premiership.
The team can’t afford to have a player whose focus isn’t 100% on the club’s goals. Hamilton await in Celtic’s next fixture and the manager must leave Edouard on the bench unless he shows some signs in training that indicate that he is going to shape up and put in some worthwhile performances.
