Celtic would make a colossal blunder hiring Paolo Di Canio

For the first time in a decade, it feels like Celtic are stuck at a crossroads.

They are 11 points behind Rangers and as a result, Neil Lennon’s job is under pressure.

The Hoops hierarchy have reportedly backed the current manager of the playing staff but if results continue, they may only be left with one option – to sack Lennon.

He has done a sterling job since replacing Brendan Rodgers but after claims were made that he still uses the same training methods, it doesn’t look great for the boss.

What might be needed is a fresh voice and new ideas to take Celtic to the next level. They haven’t really needed to get out of second gear in the last few years but with their rivals improving, perhaps they require a better manager?

One name linked with the hot seat this week has been former Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe. Though, there should be another name in the mix according to Trevor Sinclair – Paolo Di Canio.

Do you want Di Canio at Celtic?

Absolutely not

Absolutely not

Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: “He played excellently when he was up there. I think he’s got the passion, and I think he’d stimulate the players and he’s got management experience.”

Sinclair continued: “I think he would absolutely be brilliant for Celtic at the moment.”

Despite what he says, we beg to differ.

In fact, we’d go as far as suggesting this could be one of Peter Lawwell’s biggest mistakes yet if brought Di Canio to the club.

The former footballer’s notoriety in the game is well documented after being branded a fascist and racist to lashing out at opponents.

Sinclair has even noted in the past that Di Canio is “mad.” There is no better way to describe the Italian, someone who simply wouldn’t be a good appointment in Glasgow.

For starters, he has a career win percentage in management of just 39%. He was promoted from League Two with Swindon but in his first gig at a big club in Sunderland, desperately failed.

Di Canio won just three of his 13 games in charge at the Stadium of Light and caved under the pressure of managing such a huge club. At Celtic, things would be no easier, especially when they’re in danger of finally being usurped by Rangers again.

WHO IS THE PLAYER?

Lawwell needs to look for a coach with a proven track record of managing expectations and fixing sticky situations. Di Canio may be ruthless and cutthroat, but there is no guarantee he’d improve results.

He failed at Sunderland and his win percentage suggests he’d do nothing to improve matters at Parkhead.

Celtic chiefs would surely be condemning themselves to years behind Rangers by hiring Di Canio. Say what you want about his playing days in Scotland, he has not managed for seven years – that says it all.

In other news, Celtic must UNLEASH this man if they want to thrive…
