Celtic offered hope in Ross Barkley pursuit

Scottish champions Celtic have been given a boost in the pursuit of playmaker Ross Barkley, having been linked with the Englishman in recent months.

What’s the word?

According to journalist Mark Hendry, both the Hoops – and Old Firm rivals Rangers – could well be in with a chance of landing the 28-year-old, with the transfer insider writing on Twitter: “Understand Barkley knows he won’t earn the same wage he‘s been on at Chelsea wherever he goes. Ultimately he’s earning nothing until he joins a new club so it’s actually potentially a doable deal for either Glasgow club. It’s down to Ross Wilson and whether he fancies pursuing.”

The 33-cap international has been linked with a move to Parkhead of late – with the Glasgow side believed to have made an “offer” earlier in the window – although recent reports have also suggested the midfielder could be a possibility for those at Ibrox.

The former Everton man has become a more attainable target in recent days having seen his contract prematurely ripped up by Chelsea, ensuring that he is able to find a new home as a free agent.

Big impact

It could prove something of a coup for Ange Postecoglou’s side to land a player who has a wealth of experience in the Premier League, Champions League and at international level, with the hope being that he can finally fulfil the early potential he showed prior to his move to Stamford Bridge.

Although it has been a rough spell since his move to west London back in January 2018 – making just 56 starts in all competitions for the club – the £10.8m-rated gem has still shown glimpses of his quality in that time, having notably been lauded for his “big impact” by Blues boss Thomas Tuchel in a clash with Burnley last season.

A late winner on the final day of last season against Watford also saw Tuchel laud the player’s “quality”, stating that he looked “very dangerous” operating in a number ten role as the link between the midfield and attack.

Would Ross Barkley be a good signing for Celtic?

The hope will be that he can have a ‘big impact’ were he to make the move to Celtic Park in the coming days, with Postecoglou having already proven he can help kickstart the career of an ailing English talent, having done so with first-choice ‘keeper, Joe Hart.

For all the astute and largely unknown signings that the 56-year-old has made in his tenure thus far, the case of Hart has showcased that there is still room in the current squad for a more high-profile addition to thrive, with Barkley potentially the next marquee capture.

The 6 foot 2 “baller” – as dubbed by Mark Worrall – would no doubt arrive with a real hunger to succeed and a desperation to prove the doubters wrong, with his aim likely to recapture the early impressive form he showed on Merseyside, where he provided 55 goal contributions in 179 games across all fronts.

First up in this Celtic transfer quiz, which club did Celtic sign Christopher Jullien from?

Even amid his difficult stint in the English capital, the Liverpool-born menace was still praised for his “attitude” by former boss Frank Lampard, having worked tirelessly to try and regain his place in the first team.

A player of undoubted quality who is simply in need of a fresh start, it could well represent the perfect formula for him to be a success for the Hoops.
