Celtic have been urged to make a move for Cesc Fabregas in the January transfer window.

What's been said?

In recent comments cited by the Daily Record, former Celtic centre-forward Charlie Nicholas stated his belief that Ange Postecoglou should look to secure a deal for the AS Monaco central midfielder in the winter market, as he believes the 34-year-old still has much to offer in the professional game.

Speaking about the former Spain international, Nicholas said: "I spoke to Cesc last month when we were at an Arsenal game. He is still only 34 and he wants to keep playing for the next year or two. He is still fit as a flea but he isn't getting a game at Monaco.

"Celtic maybe couldn't afford his salary but perhaps they could come to an agreement with Monaco. I feel the team needs a Lubo Moravcik-type player and Cesc would be perfect. Celtic have been quick off the mark this month to sign Daizen Maeda, Reo Hatate and Yosuke Ideguchi from the J-League."

"Perfect" for Celtic

While it is undoubtedly true that Fabregas' peak years of his footballing career are behind him, it is nevertheless undeniable that, should Postecoglou be able to pull a deal off for the 34-year-old this month, the Spaniard would make a fantastic addition to the 56-year-old's options in the middle of the park.

Indeed, despite his advancing years, the £3.15m-rated midfielder still managed to impress over his 21 Ligue 1 appearances last season - only seven of which came as starts - scoring two goals, registering three assists and creating three big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 0.5 shots and making 1.2 key passes per game.

The former Barcelona player also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, making an average of 0.6 interceptions, one tackle, 20.9 passes and winning 49% of his duels per fixture - something which is even more astonishing when factoring in the £118k-per-week man spent an average of just 42 minutes on the pitch per appearance.

These returns saw the veteran earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.04, ranking him as Monaco's joint seventh-best performer in the top flight of French football last time out.

As such, it is clear for all to see that Fabregas would indeed be something of a perfect signing for the Bhoys, as the slower pace of the Scottish top flight would undoubtedly help the 110-capped international refind his best creative form - something that would certainly increase the Hoops' chances of going on to reclaim their Premiership crown come next May.
