Celtic: Pete O’Rourke drops Hannes Wolf claim

Pete O’Rourke has dropped a claim on Celtic’s reported interest in bringing Hannes Wolf to Parkhead in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

In a recent interview with GIVEMESPORT, the journalist revealed that Ange Postecoglou is a big fan of the Borussia Monchengladbach attacking midfielder, who has been heavily linked with a move to Celtic this winter, as well as stating his belief that the 22-year-old has been a long-term target of the Premiership side.

Speaking about Celtic’s links with the Austria international, O’Rourke said: “Wolf has been a long-term target for Celtic. Ange Postecoglou is reportedly a big admirer of him and it seems he doesn’t really figure in Monchengladbach’s plans going forward.”

Who would be a better signing for Celtic?

Forget McGree

Following Anthony Joseph’s recent claim that Celtic look set to miss out on the signing of FC Charlotte central midfielder Riley McGree, it would appear a very wise move for Postecoglou to now turn his attention to securing a deal for Wolf – as the £12.5m-rated man would appear to be a huge upgrade on the signing of the Australian international.

While it is true that the 22-year-old has not enjoyed the best of campaigns since his £8.55m switch to Gladbach last summer, the versatile attacking midfielder has nevertheless proven in previous years that he would make a fantastic addition to Celtic’s current attacking options.

Indeed, over his 22 Austrian Bundesliga appearances for Red Bull Salzburg back in 2018/19, the £27k-per-week man scored eight goals, provided seven assists and created four big chances for his teammates, in addition to taking an average of 1.9 shots and making 1.1 key passes per game.

These returns saw the former RB Leipzig starlet earn a highly impressive seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.92, playing a key role in his side’s title-winning campaign that year.

As such, the player who Christoph Freund claimed was a “perfect example” of how a young player can progress through the Red Bull setup would certainly appear to be a talent with a much higher ceiling than that of McGree – who’s highest level of experience in the professional game was arguably his year-and-a-half-long loan spell at Birmingham City, something which leads us to believe Postecouglou must now go all out for the Austrian playmaker.
