Celtic: Parkhead outfit “keeping tabs” on Edouard Michut

Celtic could still be eyeing a move for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Edouard Michut, despite the deal having gone cold of late.

What’s the word?

Reports last month revealed that the Parkhead outfit were plotting a move for a fee of around £2m for the 19-year-old, albeit with the Ligue 1 outfit said to be holding out £5m for the promising Frenchman.

Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou had seemingly attempted to quash the suggestion that the Scottish champions are tracking the teenager, although one view was that the 56-year-old was simply trying to drive down the price.

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has now provided his verdict on the move, with the transfer insider stating that the Glasgow side could still be monitoring the youngster with just a few weeks left in the window.

Speaking in an interview with Football FanCast, he stated: “I’m sure they’ll be keeping tabs on his situation at Paris Saint-Germain. If he’s not playing in their team it might open the door for a potential move before the close of the window”.

Imagine him and Barkley

As O’Rourke alluded to, the situation could well change before the September deadline, particularly with the playmaker looking unlikely to play a role at the Parc des Princes this season, having yet to feature in the early weeks of the new campaign.

The suggestion earlier this summer had been that he would move on before the end of the window, with one report stating that Christophe Galtier’s side does not deem him ready to feature in French football as yet.

A move to a potentially lower-quality league such as the Scottish Premiership could well see his talents flourish, however, with the “highly technical” gem – as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig – appearing to have a bright future ahead of him.

While he has made just eight senior appearances for the Parisien giants thus far – where he has been dubbed the new Marco Verratti – the £2.7m-rated prospect has already chipped in with one assist, showcasing his creative touch in the final third.

Although it could well be a bold step to unleash such an inexperienced asset into Postecoglou’s side, the former Yokohama boss could well ease the transition by partnering him with an experienced head in midfield.

One such figure who could be the man to guide him is that of Ross Barkley, with the Chelsea man having been heavily linked with a move to Celtic Park in recent weeks, having slipped down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.

First up in this Celtic transfer quiz, which club did Celtic sign Christopher Jullien from?

Despite his fall from grace, the 28-year-old still boasts undoubted quality as a link between the midfield and attack, having notably been compared to the likes of Wayne Rooney and Paul Gascoigne in his youth.

With long-serving Aussie, Tom Rogic out the door, it could rest upon the Englishman to fill that creative void in midfield, with partnering the dynamic Michut alongside him only set to make his task that much easier.

Two men with potentially a point to prove – for different reasons – a Barkley-Michut midfield axis could be a hugely exciting duo to watch.
