Exclusive: Steve Howey tips Alex Neil as Neil Lennon successor

Due to a poor run of form in the Premiership this season, Neil Lennon finds himself staring down the barrel of Peter Lawwell’s gun. Despite guiding Celtic to the infamous ‘quadruple treble’, the Scottish giants must eat humble pie and admit defeat to their neighbours and bitter rivals Rangers.

The blue side of Glasgow lead the reigning champions by a whopping 18 points, having not yet suffered a loss in the league. For Celtic however, they must make do with second place and look ahead to next season to try to rectify their mistakes. Whether Lennon will be alongside the team though is another story.

Would you like to see Alex Neil as Celtic manager?

The Irishman could be facing the chopping block and names are already flooding in who could be his potential successor. Rafael Benitez was heavily linked to the Bhoys and even the recently dismissed Frank Lampard has had his name connected with the club.

Another manager on the radar is Alex Neil and bookmakers have put the Preston North End boss at 16/1 to be the next man in line for the Celtic job.

Football FanCast spoke to Steve Howey about whether Neil would be a good fit for the Glaswegians amid rumours of Lennon’s impending exit.

“I think he would like that job,” the ex-defender admitted. “Given the fact he’s Scottish, I think he would take it [the Celtic job].”

Who did Celtic face in their first match of 2020?

After Celtic also took an early exit from the Europa League this season, it’s been a hugely disappointing season for the fans. The departure of Jeremie Frimpong will have also dimmed some hope, but the emergence of the likes of David Turnbull and Stephen Welsh is enough to keep morale ticking over.

The Celtic board may opt to give Lennon one last chance, but should he be shown the door, Neil is amongst many others lurking to pounce and fill his shoes.

In other news, Celtic must move for bargain-priced Sinisa Sanicanin this summer…
