The stage is set, the teams are ready and the road to Lisbon begins today with the Champions League draw.
The process is the same as always with 32 clubs divided in four groups. Premier League champions Manchester United, Europa League winners Chelsea and Arsenal are placed in the first group whereas Manchester City have fallen into the third tier after two disappointing campaigns in Europe.
The first group features last year’s champions Bayern as well as La Liga winners Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Portugal’s elite – Porto and Benfica. The Red Devils, the Blues and the Gunners cannot be drawn with any of those teams, but the Citizens will definitely face one of them.
The second pot holds more dangerous teams such as Spanish Cup winners Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, Ligue 1 champions Paris Sant-Germain and Serie A’s Juventus.
The third group boasts last year’s finalists Borussia Dortmund, Zenit St Petersburg, Dutch champions Ajax, Galatasaray, Bayer Leverkusen and Olympiacos.
The fourth pot, although the weakest, could still pose some difficult questions with Scottish champions Celtic, Real Sociedad and Rafa Benitez’s Napoli lurking in the shadows.
The draw will take place in Monaco at 4:45 pm and the first matches will take place on September 17 and 18.
