Danny Welbeck’s first ever career hat-trick saw Arsenal recover from a disappointing Champions League opening defeat with a 4-1 victory at home to Galatasaray. The England international combined well with Alexis Sanchez in the first-half for his opening effort, which he finished neatly past Fernando Muslera. Welbeck then made it 2-0 by showing his power to escape the Gala defence before rounding off the scoring in the second 45 with a neat dinked finish. Prior to Welbeck’s final effort Sanchez found the back of the net himself, while Galatasaray got one back through a Burak Yilmaz penalty.
Liverpool’s sloppy start to the season continued with a 1-0 loss in Switzerland. Brendan Rodgers’ men struggled throughout the 90 minutes against Basel, who came out on top thanks to a close range effort from captain Marco Streller. Mario Balotelli went close for the Reds with a long-range free-kick, while Raheem Sterling squandered a wonderful opportunity when his control let him down late in the second half.
