Aston Villa boss backs new signing to improve

New Aston Villa signing Yacouba SyllaAston Villa manager Paul Lambert believes that January signing Yacouba Sylla will develop into a top player, following his debut against Everton.

The midfielder came on as a second-half substitute during the 3-3 draw at Goodison Park and looked solid.

But, Lambert is confident that better performances are around the corner and that the former Clermont Foot man will improve once he has adjusted to life in England and at Villa Park:

“He did alright considering he’s only just come here,” he is quoted by via the club’s official website.

“I think he’s got loads of energy, which you need, and I thought he did really fine.

“That’s the aim for him, to try and make his mark here, and we want him to get to learn the language as well.”

The ex-Norwich boss also urged the Midlanders’ fans to be patient with Sylla, who was previously playing in the French second tier:

“He’s at a club where the expectancy level is a lot different to the one he’s just left.”

Sylla arrived alongside Simon Dawkins, who signed on loan from Tottenham, as Lambert went about strengthening his squad for a potential relegation dogfight.

He was originally thought to be interested in Moussa Sissoko, but the French international elected to join Newcastle.

With captain Stiliyan Petrov out of action after being diagnosed with Leukaemia, the Villains have been missing an authoritative figure in the centre of midfield, and Lambert will be hopeful that Sylla can offer the necessary skills to help out.
