Aston Villa look set to be without defender Ciaran Clark and midfielder Karim El Ahmadi for Saturday’s trip to face Norwich City.
Both players missed the 6-1 win over Sunderland on Monday as Clark has a foot injury and El Ahmadi has a groin problem, but boss Paul Lambert was hopeful the pair would both be fit for the trip to his former club Norwich on Saturday.
However, it seems that neither Clark or El Ahmadi will be risked at Carrow Road, so Lambert could stick with the side which started against the Black Cats as he looks to put one over his former club and guide Villa to 40 points, which should secure their safety.
Richard Dunne, Marc Albrighton, Gary Gardner and Chris Herd are all long-term absentees.
It will be the second time Lambert has been back at Norwich since he left them for Villa last summer after he masterminded a 4-1 Capital One Cup win earlier in the season.
However, the Scot insists it is ‘just another game’ and he is purely focused on securing three vital points.
Lambert said: “I think if you get caught up in my connection there it deflects from the game. It’s not about me going back there because I’ve been back already.
“I had three fabulous years there and took a team from League One, built it up, the crowd bought into it, the lads I worked with were fantastic.
“It’s another game and I’m looking forward to going down there. I have fantastic memories there but it has gone.”
He added: “My job is here. We have to win. If our fans are anything like they were for the cup game then we’ll be taking a ferocious support down there. It will be a tough game but we’re certainly playing well.”
