Aston Villa have opened talks with Nemanja Vidic and hope to sign the ex-Manchester United defender on a free transfer, according to reports from The Sun.
Vidic was officially released by Inter Milan earlier this week after a season in which he struggled to break into the first-team due to lack of form and injuries.
However, the Serbia international could now make a return to the English top flight, with Villa boss Remi Garde reportedly keen on signing the veteran centre-back to add some steel to his side’s defence.
Despite the Midlands club being rock-bottom of the Premier League and a staggering 10 points from safety, owner Randy Lerner is reluctant to overspend during their crisis, which makes the free transfer of Vidic a viable option.
The Villans are also close to signing goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic in a £5m deal, which could see American shot-stopper Brad Guzan drop to the bench in a full defensive reshuffle.
Vidic, 34, won five Premier League titles and one Champions League medal during his time at Old Trafford.
