The Yorkshire Post reported last week that Aston Villa and Middlesbrough were battling for the signature of Southampton left-back Matt Targett, and Villa fans on Twitter are still desperate for Steve Bruce to bring in the 22-year-old.
Villa are currently fourth in the Championship having won two and drawn three of their opening five games of the season, although they would have beaten Reading on Saturday were it not for James Chester giving away a 93rd minute penalty that provided Sam Baldock with the equaliser.
Right-back Alan Hutton has been deputising on the left hand side of Bruce’s defence so far this season but Villa fans are clearly keen for the 33-year-old to make way for Targett.
The Southampton defender spent the second half of last season on loan in the Championship with Fulham. The Eastleigh-born youngster made 21 appearances for the Cottagers, scoring one goal and providing two assists as the West London side stormed to promotion, beating Villa in the playoff final.
