Aston Villa fans pay tribute to club’s former boss Ron Saunders

To this day, Ron Saunders is the only manager to have taken charge of Aston Villa, Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion.

He managed Villa between 1974 and 1982, before spending four years with Birmingham. Saunders then had one season (1986-87) at West Brom ahead of his retirement.

The above is a terrific quiz question, but there is no doubt that his most successful spell came at Villa, who he guided to promotion in his first season as manager, in addition to winning the League Cup.

Saunders helped re-establish Villa as a First Division club, and famously guided them to the First Division title in 1981, before resigning from his position in February 1982 due to a disagreement with the board.

Saunders turned 85 on Tuesday, and Villa’s official Twitter account were on hand to pay tribute to the former striker.Β The post was quickly followed by reaction from the Villa supporters, who offered their own views on the club’s former manager.
