Aston Villa have struggled to find their feet so far this season, with a 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday extended their winless run to five matches.
Steve Bruce’s side begun the campaign with two consecutive victories over Hull City and Wigan Athletic but have since seen their form decline dramatically, which leaves them at risk of slipping out of the battle for promotion.
As such, the Villans are reportedly seeking the addition of a new defender and reports have suggested that the club are considering securing free-agent Steven Caulker in to provide some much-needed experience in defence.
Still just 26, Caulker has endured a major fall from grace in recent years and most recently played in Scotland with Dundee United but has also spent time with Tottenham Hotspur, QPR and even Liverpool during Jurgen Klopp’s reign.
Available for nothing, many fans believe he is worth a punt and we have gathered some of the best reactions from social media below.
I'd love this. Caulker is a brilliant player who so far has been brutally stymied by stifling mental issues. Just worry with the club in the condition we're in whether we're the right place for him #AVFC https://t.co/FT2EGUPmBR

Think Caulker to Villa would be a good move, playing alongside a pro like Chester would only be a good thing, looked decent at Liverpool and Spurs, no surprise things went downhill at QPR. #avfc

If Caulker signed, it would need to be on strict terms, and the club would need to invest an awful lot of time and patience in him. If we could turn him around, and get him to live up to his potential it would be genius, but it would be a mountain of a task.#AVFC #Caulker

Decent player if his heads in the right place. Bags a few goals too.

In theory a really good signing on a free,if he can resolve his issues then this could be a really good signing on low wages and no fee with potential resale value in the future rather than an older short term fix

Perhaps it's my SJW side kicking in but I love the idea of giving the lad a chance. Just a trial, see where he's at. If we can help him manage his mental health problems and kick start his career again he's one hell of a defender #AVFC https://t.co/7FQRP6Yzd4

I get the idea of John Terry coming back to #avfc but Steven Caulker is a great shout, younger too. His got such great potential & he has had a torrid time. Why can’t we be the club to platform him back to his abilities we’ve got the foundations for him. I hope it happens. #utv
