Dalian Atkinson scored 25 times in 85 league appearances for Aston Villa between 1991 and 1995.
The Englishman started his professional career with Ipswich Town in 1985, before representing Sheffield Wednesday and Spanish side Real Sociedad ahead of a move to Villa.
Following four years at Villa Park, Atkinson represented Turkish giants Fenerbahce – where he spent time out on loan with Metz and Manchester City – before turning out for Daejeon Citizen and Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in the final stages of his career.
It would have been his 50th birthday on Wednesday, but Atkinson passed away in August 2016 in tragic circumstances when a police taser caused a cardiac arrest.
The Villa supporters have chosen to remember his ability on the football field, and many took to Twitter on Wednesday to lavish praise on the centre-forward, who scored once in one appearance for England B in March 1990.
A selection of the Twitter reaction can be seen below:
On what would have been Dalian Atkinson’s 50th birthday, we remember the striker who brought so much joy to the claret & blue.

His partnership with Dean Saunders, post Premie League, was and is the best I have seen at Villa Park.
R.I.P big man. X
