Aston Villa must not cash in at any cost

Christian BentekePaul Lambert is adamant that Aston Villa must hang on to Benteke, amid reports of interest from Manchester City, according to The Mirror.

City have already raided the Midlands club in the past for midfielders James Milner and Gareth Barry and are now rumored to be interested in striker Christian Benteke.

Benteke has been a revelation the Premier League this season having bagged a respectable 13 league goals in a relegation threatened side.

Manchester City however aren’t the only admirers said to be interested in the 22-year-old Belgium International with Italian side Fiorentina also keeping tabs on the big man.

Benteke cost the Villains £8million in the summer after leaving Genk, and Lambert see’s the striker as Aston Villa’s key player to build a side around.

The strikers long-term future however may be out of Lambert’s hands if Villa fail to survive their relegation battle having struggled defensively this season.

They’re currently just one place above the relegation places going into their Sunday crunch game with Liverpool and will be hoping that home advantage will be enough for them to grab the win.

The reverse fixture produced one of the shocks of the season as the Midlands club earned a 3-1 win at Anfield back in December, and it was Benteke earning the plaudits that day, as the striker scored a brace.
