Aston Villa must win the race for Nick Powell

According to TEAMtalk, a number of Championship clubs are interested in signing Wigan Athletic attacker Nick Powell before the end of the month.

What’s the word, then?

The English transfer window closed earlier this month, but it is expected to be a busy end to August as clubs look to boost their squads with loan arrivals.

Powell’s future has been the subject of much speculation in recent weeks, with the 24-year-old only having one year left to run on his contract at the DW Stadium.

According to TEAMtalk, Middlesbrough and Leeds United both want to sign Powell before Friday’s deadline, but Aston Villa also have a long-standing interest in the midfielder.

The report claims that Wigan could accept an offer in the region of £5m, although any deal would see Powell move initially on loan before completing a permanent transfer in January.

It is not a surprise that so many clubs are interested in taking the former Manchester United ace, and Villa must ensure that they win the battle to sign him.

Why would Powell be a good signing?

Powell scored 16 times in 64 appearances for Crewe Alexandra before Sir Alex Ferguson brought him to Man United in the summer of 2012.

Powell only made nine appearances for the Red Devils, with the move coming too soon in his career. However, he did show glimpses of his talent at Old Trafford.

The midfielder has gone from strength to strength since arriving at Wigan in 2016, however, and managed 15 goals in all competitions for the club last term.

This season, the 6ft ace has scored three times and registered four assists in four Championship appearances, which is a stunning record at this stage of the campaign.

Villa already have a number of talented attackers, but the arrival of Powell – to play alongside Jack Grealish – would make Steve Bruce’s side the favourites to win the Championship this season.
