According to The Sun, Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe will remain on loan at Aston Villa for the 2018-19 campaign.
Tuanzebe joined Villa on loan from United in January, with the defender making five Championship appearances since arriving at Villa Park.
The 20-year-old has struggled with an ankle injury over the last few weeks, but it is understood that he has made enough of an impression on Villa for the club to want to keep him.
According to The Sun, United boss Jose Mourinho is keen for the defender to spend one more season out on loan, and feels that Steve Bruce is the perfect manager to aid his development.
It is understood that the deal does not depend on whether Villa are promoted, with the club currently in the Championship playoffs as they look to seal a return to the Premier League.
The presence of John Terry and James Chester at Villa has made it difficult for Tuanzebe to earn minutes in his favoured centre-back position since joining the Championship club.
Terry is expected to depart this summer, however, and there is no question that Tuanzebe has the ability to form a strong centre-back partnership with Chester at Villa Park.
The England Under-21 international has eight United appearances to his name, and is still seen as a future first-team player despite struggling for football in the first half of this season.
Another loan spell would do the defender the world of good, and Villa does appear to be the perfect club for Tuanzebe to continue his development over the next 12 months.
A number of teams will be closely monitoring developments ahead of the summer transfer window, but Villa are in a strong position to keep the centre-back, and he should be given a key role at Villa Park during the 2017-18 campaign.
