HYS: Who is Aston Villa’s best signing of the summer?

Rumours of big financial problems following Aston Villa’s failure to secure promotion to the Premier League last season meant that the Midlands outfit were relatively quiet in the transfer market in the early stages of the summer.

However, that changed when the NSWE group bought a majority stake in the Championship club, with new chairman Nassef Sawiris sanctioning a number of impressive deals that should see the club competing in the promotion race once again this term.

Although permanent signings were few and far between when the window for those deals closed on August 9, Villa took advantage of the loan window which remained open until August 31 for EFL clubs, bringing in the likes of Yannick Bolasie and Tammy Abraham from Everton and Aston Villa respectively, as well as exciting Lille winger Anwar El Ghazi.

As well as strengthening in attacking areas, John McGinn boosted the midfield having signed from Hibernian, while goalkeepers Orjan Nyland and Andre Moreira arrived after former loanee Sam Johnstone joined West Bromwich Albion.

Steve Bruce’s side have certainly made an inconsistent start to the campaign, and the pressure is already on the manager following a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Sheffield United at Bramall Lane last weekend, with the 27-year-old Nyland in particular already looking like he may not prove to be a decent addition.
